Internal Family Systems
I am a clinical therapist who utilizes Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy as a primary framework in my work with individuals seeking greater emotional balance, self-understanding, and psychological resilience. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and rooted in the belief that people are not broken, but organized around adaptive responses shaped by life experience.
Internal Family Systems therapy understands the mind as a system of distinct “parts,” each with its own perspectives, emotions, and roles. Some parts work hard to manage daily life and prevent distress, while others carry the emotional weight of past experiences, including pain, fear, or unmet needs. These parts are not symptoms to be eliminated, but meaningful aspects of the internal system that developed to protect the individual in some way.
At the core of IFS is the concept of Self-energy. Self is a natural state of calm, clarity, compassion, and confidence that exists within every person, regardless of their history. In therapy, the goal is not to get rid of parts, but to help clients access Self-energy and build a respectful, compassionate relationship with their internal system. From this state, parts can be understood, unburdened of extreme roles, and supported in reorganizing in healthier ways.
In sessions, I guide clients in learning how to notice their internal experiences with curiosity rather than judgment. Therapy involves identifying and working with different parts, understanding their protective intentions, and gently addressing the underlying needs or wounds they carry. Over time, this process supports increased emotional regulation, improved self-trust, reduced internal conflict, and a stronger sense of internal leadership.
The intention of IFS therapy is to help clients develop a lasting, compassionate relationship with themselves. Rather than relying solely on coping strategies, clients learn how to relate differently to their inner world, fostering long-term healing, resilience, and integration. Therapy becomes a process of restoring balance within the internal system, allowing individuals to move through life with greater ease, authenticity, and connection.
